Maui 2012

June and I spent three weeks in Maui, Hawaii in Jan/Feb.  Jamie joined us for a week two days after we arrived. Brandon and Moye joined us for a week starting on the day that Jamie left.  June had been there several times before, so we all toured the island together under her expert guidance.

June got a new underwater camera for the trip, so there are HUNDREDS of pictures.  Fortunately (for you) I pulled out what I considered the very best and slapped them onto these pages.

Here is a list of the pages of our trip.

June found this wonderful home in an unbelievable location. It was perfect.

Brandon and Moye pulling into the front of the house.

The gate in the background is SUPPOSED to keep out the riff-raff.  Hmmm.

Back of the house with a small lanai (Hawaiian for patio). It was perfect for piling up the snorkel gear and towels.

View from the back of the house. The island of Molokai is across the water and passed the giant butterfly.

It was very distracting looking out across the channel and seeing these damned whales! We almost couldn't take a picture without them getting in the shot.  Actually, it proved to be very difficult to get a shot of them. They appear for about a second.

For me the Cove was the best part of the trip. It was about a 200 yd. walk from the house to this overlook.  Then a short downhill walk to a warm swimming pool and easy ocean access. They stock the cove with giant sea turtles! We snorkeled with them almost every day.

Here is a GREAT video that June put to music.

We did get a few little drizzles every now and then, which cooled things off a bit and rendered this wonderful shot.

View from the same perch above the cove.  The end of Molokai to the left in the distance is just about due north.

Close-up of those beautiful homes in the above pic. In front of the house with the orange staircase is a very popular beach with the turtles.

And here's the very beach, with Jaime trying to make her peace with the locals. They gave her the heebie-jeebies when she tried to get back into the water at the same time they did. We counted 30 turtles here one day!

The Cove from the swimming pool, and Jaime getting her dose of vitamin D for the day!

The bougainvillea grows like a weed in Hawaii. This ugly fence separated us from the hooligans next door.

June was also passionate about the Hibiscus. I could fill an entire page of nothing but pictures of these giant flowers.

We would pass this banana tree on the short walk to the cove. This may be an Apple banana, a local variety.

Another June passion (some might call it obsession): starting the day with coffee and gathering fresh Plumeria that has fallen from the tree just out the side door. VERY fragrant, they are used to make Leis.

From close to the perch looking southwest. This island in the distance is Lanai. Every night, the sun set right about in the middle of this shot, just like clockwork.  Wanna see some sunsets?
