Ventura -August '09

Chelsea and I spent a week at Harbortown Point Resort in Ventura, Ca.

No - we didn't stay here. This is a view of the shipyard right out our front door. It was actually quite entertaining watching people working on their boats. I love watching people work when I am on vacation!

Here is the place we stayed, looking from the channel that goes out to the ocean. Chelsea in her kayak in the foreground. It was foggy every morning, but it cleared up nicely in the afternoon.

Here is the channel from Harbortown. It is a bit of a paddle, but just past the man-made barrier on the right, it is open ocean, full of critters.

We were on the third (and top) floor of the complex. Everyday, this guy would walk along the patio looking for handouts.  He actually said, "hey, got any spare change?"

"Oh sure", said I, "so you can buy some beer? Not on my watch buddy!!"

And lots of these very lazy harbor seals. They just laid around all day.  This was a bit of a ride out from shore on the sailboat.

We saw these dolphins the first morning we went out on the ocean. It is not easy to take a picture of them. They would surface for about a second, then down again for 10 - 60 seconds, no idea where or when they will come up again.

Another picture of three of them - really quite exciting. We thought we would see them every time we went out.  Not so. This morning, and that afternoon out sailing, and that was the end of the dolphin show.

Check out the video on the sailboat.

We took a short drive north to ride bikes around Santa Barbara. We made it up the hill to the SB mission, so we took the tour.

No tour is complete without a visit the mission cemetery and the scary 'devil-tree'. I just made that up, but it does look a bit scary, eh?

This is the ONLY wall (on the left) in the joint that is original, the kitchen - 220 yrs old.

Mission San Buenaventura - downtown Ventura. Chelsea fixing a flat on her bike - again. Being that is a one-person job, I killed some time...

...and took this picture of a beautiful mural just to the right of the fountain in the previous picture. Apparently this little alley was a hangout for the Chinese who worked in the area in the 1870's.

Here is a modern hangout on a Monday night in downtown Ventura.  We passed this little alley and found many local jazz musicians jamming is small groups. Quite entertaining. This was taken with my phone camera - little fuzzy.

We rode bikes just about every day. This stand of Bouganvillea is on a ride we took from Ojai up to a small campground, Wheeler Gorge, in the hills.

Here is the ride, about 7 miles up this canyon out of Ojai.

It was about 90 degrees, up hill, about 1.5 hours. Almost no cars on the road. Magically, this hillside was dripping cold, clear spring water right behind where Chelsea is standing. We both took a nice shower.

Another nice ride up a hill. View of Ventura from Grant park. The harbor is in the distance.  Good time, thanks to my good friend David.
