Birding at Point Lobos
  June 2025

June and I joined Emily and David at Steve and Sherlyn's place for a Wed to Sat adventure in Monterey. David had read online that a rare Yellow-crowned Heron was spotted at Point Lobos. So on Friday, David, Steve and I went looking for it.

On our beautiful walk there we saw the following other birds...

Black Oystercatcher
I did take this picture in Monterey, but in June 2026 when we were there for Clayton's wedding. I went out early on our last day to join David after he witnessed thousands of Shearwaters migrating south. I didn't see that many but I did see them through his powerful scope. Then I spotted this guy nearby.

At last, the main attraction that brought us there: a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. Not common to this area, they are usually seen on the East coast of the USA and other parts of the world. Unbelievable that David spotted this camouflaged bird at least 500 yards away with his eagle eyes!
