Birding at Newport Beach
  February 2025

June and I spent 3 weeks on Balboa Island, and then a week in Palm Desert. While in Newport Beach, I carried my camera on Balboa Island, the Back Bay trail, and Laguna Beach. Then, just around the pond at Desert Breezes.

Here are the birds that we saw...

Brown Pelican

.

Pelicans often fly in formation.
There is also an American White Pelican, not shown here.
They look similar to an Egret with a strange plate on it's bill.

.

Willet
Not to be confused with the following...

Whimbrel - with a long, curved bill; or the following...

.

Marbled Gotwit, with the embarrassingly HUGE bill

.

Western Gull
David says "G
ulls are notoriously tricky" to identify.

Another Western Gull
.
The ever popular Rock Pigeon
.

Snowy Egret

Great Blue Heron

Pied-billed Grebe

.

Sanderlings - Non-breeding adults

American Pipit

The following birds were seen at Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

Green-Winged Teal

Cinnamon Teal

American Wigeon

Ruddy Duck (non-breeding male)

Greater Road Runner - ducking into the brush
Contrary to popular belief, it's call is NOT "beep-beep"

Yellow-Rumped Warbler
We saw it while hiking at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park

.

African Grey Parrot
We saw this pet on Balboa Island

.

Egyptian Goose
This image is not as clear as the others because we saw many of these on two different golf courses. I didn't have my good camera.

The following birds were spotted at Palm Desert.

Northern Mockingbird

.

Green Heron

.

House Finch
.
Black-Crowned Night Heron
Watch the 1-minute video of it choking down the fish.
