Surfing in Santa Cruz

For his 17th birthday, Brett wanted to try his hand at surfing in Santa Cruz. He had read about it, talked with a few friends, and he thought he was ready. Brett, June, and myself drove down to Santa Cruz, stopped at one of the many surf shops, and rented him the appropriate equipment. He then worked his way down to the very populated beach, and paddled out to test his metal.

We were NOT alone in this very popular surfing area

We mainly watched from the road up above the action.

This is probably his best ride.

See the video of a few of his rides.

After a couple of hours of this, we decided to move to the area by the river, site where years before he went boogie boarding.

But first we drove passed the area where the experienced surfers play.

After Brett informed us of how surfers are territorial and they may not allow Brett to surf in this area, we convinced Brett to give it a try. He then spent the next 30 minutes trying to paddle out beyond these larger breakers.

In the end, the debate about territory was moot. The relentless breakers didn't allow him to surf in this area. He may have been beaten, both mentally and physically, but it was still a great day in Santa Cruz!
