The Patio Cover

What's a hot tub if leaves, branches, sap, rain, and God-knows-what, comes falling out of the sky onto an otherwise peaceful and relaxing soak. I realized soon after the hot tub was situated, that some sort of cover was necessary.

I talked with a friend at work and got great advice. He guided me through the initial design. Then when that didn't work, plan B was created (the hanging ledger). Then when I screwed that up, plan B revised. With a lot of solitary struggling, Chris's help over the Christmas break, and more solitary struggling, it was finished.

Some people say, "Don't you like to look up at the stars at night." Well, I never saw the stars at night with all the street lights in the neighborhood. And I definitely don't like having crap fall on me while I am trying to relax. But now I worry about the whole thing falling on me.

What are those ugly 2x4's? Braces -

I still don't trust that the whole thing isn't gonna come toppling down. Pisser if I was soaking at the time. That would hurt!

Here is the support on the bedroom side. Two aluminum brackets lag-bolted to the 2x4 rafters. See the 2x4 braces below the ledger helping to hold up the whole thing?

Same thing on the other side, but three aluminum brackets. No brace on this side. I should paint that 2x6.

Fortunately, in the middle of the roof there is a standard 2x8 ledger bolted to the house. The patio cover rafters are mounted to these. Cheap, but durable roofing material, with shiplap pine underneath, finished with outdoor urethane.
