I knew going into this trip that snorkeling is the big attraction. So before we left home we all acquired good snorkel gear. The water is crystal clear, very warm, and FULL of lots of colorful fish and...stuff.
When we arrived on Sat, we immediately went in the water outside our room. After a few minutes of getting situated with the gear, we were swimming around looking at fish. Chelsea spotted a large parrotfish, and we all gathered around to gawk. It was the first of many that we would see. We decided to jump in the car and drive south a couple of miles to this well-known site - the wreck of the Cali. We played in the water for a couple of hours. Sunday we headed north to Hell, Turtle Farm, and Cemetery Beach. |
First stop...Hell. The town - a post office / junk shop - is actually named Hell. |
We sent Kathy a postcard that is postmarked 'Hell' - Wish you were here! |
I think it is called hell because of this volcanic rock formation just behind the Hell shack. Don't be fooled! That little thing is an image of the devil. - NOT really the devil. |
Now THIS is the devil (the one in the middle). Business in Hell was kinda slow. We went in on a Sunday morning, so I guess everyone was in church. The devil / owner, was born and raised in Hell, so he quickly launched into his standup routine, with all the Hell jokes, which he obviously had done for decades. He didn't like to be interrupted either. |
Cemetery Beach Pretty, but the snorkeling is not so good. Too much sand in the water which makes it not too clear. Also, fish don't like the sandy beach that has no reef action..rocks, coral, etc. |
The beach is adjacent to a cemetery. Hence, the name. |
Chelsea and I wanted to move on. Chris and Brett played in the surf, probably the best on the island, which is not saying much. |
The turtle farm was an all-day event, and a bit pricey, so we politely declined. We did bit of snorkeling across the street though. It was deep, with so-so snorkeling. So we went back down south to do some great snorkeling at cheeseburger reef (in the Burger King parking lot). We met a retired couple from the states, now living there, who pointed out the best spots. We saw a stingray close to shore, and a school of tarpons. Next day, swimming with the Stingrays. |
